If you think nothing exciting ever happens around here, you need to head downtown October 2nd - 4th and see Indy cars tearing up the street to qualify for the Texaco Grand Prix of Houston. The big names in racing will be there, and ABC and ESPN will be broadcasting this world-class racing event to the world.
The George R. Brown convention center is the base of the course, which winds around Austin, San Jacinto and LaBranch streets, making 10 turns and covering 1.68 miles. Hard to believe, isn't it? That normally quiet part of town will be buzzing with high-powered engines this weekend and famous names like Unser and Andretti will be in the air.
The reserved seating is sold out, and even the General Admission tickets and "paddock passes" to the George R. Brown must be purchased in advance from the Texaco Grand Prix. The City has signed a six year contract with the organization planning this event, so this will only be the grand premier of a race that the world will be talking about. Here's hoping they have great weather and safe conditions and enjoy a great success with this event!
