It's been said that the penalty will always be death for the crime of Stupidity. That is true if you consider it as a natural law: the harshest punishment will always be doled out for committing Stupid acts. Some may consider that the President is on trial for just being stupid - obviously he hasn't used his best judgement, and has a problem with "thinking with the wrong brain", as they say. But you can see the same thing in many cases, because a little Stupidity goes a long way. When you hear of corporate embezzlers or city officials getting caught with their hands in the till, it's often for an amount of money that's not even worth risking their careers over.
So many commonplace criminals are stupid that there's a regular TV show about "America's Dumbest Criminals". It doesn't take a lot of brains to take up a life of crime. Maybe that guilty conscience makes people shoot themselves in the foot, time and again. When you're nervous about what you're doing, that's when you're most likely to totally blow it.
The safest way to keep from getting caught committing this crime is to think before you act. If you're thinking of breaking the rules, you'd better consider the consequences and the risk, and see if there's not a better plan for getting what you want. I once had a friend who processed payments for a company, and sometimes people would send in tens and twenties in cash to make their payments. My friend said that it was always tempting, when she needed lunch money and those greenbacks fell out of the envelopes - and she had to ask herself, "Is it worth risking my job for a ten dollar bill?" Of course not!
It's probably best not to do anything that you'd be totally embarrassed to get caught at - that tempting Devil loves to have a good joke at your expense. So, when that intern flirts with you, when that ten dollar bill falls out of the envelope, when that little devil on your shoulder tells you "Hey, I can outrun that cop car ..." - you'd better think twice!
