1999

Are you ready to wrap up the twentieth century? Can any of us tell what the upcoming year and the year beyond will bring? Of course not. All we can do is this:

  1. Try to learn the lessons of the past
  2. Do the best we can with the present
  3. Plan for the best possible future.

The lesson of the past is this: Don't Panic. It's said that in the year 1000 A.D., everyone expected the end of the world, and the punchline was this: It didn't happen. Once again, many are preaching the end times. It won't hurt you to prepare yourself spiritually for whatever may come, but don't be surprised if the world keeps spinning around and life goes on. Some people will be acting crazy next year, and sometimes that's contagious, so keep a cool head.

Doing the best you can with the present is a little harder. Starting now, set your sights on making 1999 a special year. Take care of some of those things you've been meaning to "get around to". I know you have lots of things that need taking care of: your health, your relationships, your home, your career - make a list of the items you'd like to get shipshape before the new millennium rolls in. You'll enjoy the party more if you know that you're putting your best foot forward into the twenty-first century.

Planning for the best possible future means just what it says. Plan to live a good, long life, and start putting aside for whatever retirement goals you have (if you haven't started already). If you're lucky enough to have a family, remember that these people might be taking care of you someday, and treat them accordingly. Planning for a long and happy life means that you can't afford to be too old to try new things, meet new people, see new places.

Here's wishing you all a happy and prosperous 1999!
